yeah, so, it was looking like we were going to be cut to an hour and a half for a while there, but then we got a last minute reprieve. so we're going to be two hours (still) from 8-10pm saturday nights. just as soon as basketball season ends (second week of march, i think).

we got lucky, as a lot of people were shunted around the schedule, and we unfortunately lost both don and wilbo's versions of the clothesline. which means two hours less of great, bravely fucked up radio BUT two MORE hours of radiohead and sufjan stevens. cough.

anyways, all hail to the clothesline - don and wilbo were greats and the kind of DJs wprb desperately needs more of, but due to a bunch of circumstances i probably shouldn't go into we non-student DJs are sort of expendable.

debating whether or not to do a halloween-themed show, a semi-themed show or just say fuck it and play what i want. or maybe just play two hours of metal as a psych-up soundtrack for the teenage animal sacrificers of the world.

if you listened last night about 9 pm you heard sword heaven pulverize (1. To pound, crush, or grind to a powder or dust.) our studio, our airwaves, various oxygen and nitrogen molecules, etc. THANK YOU SWORD HEAVEN! they're still touring and some of those shows include triangle and rhino and r.l. stine. stein?

due to time constraints triangle and rhino recorded a live set to be broadcast next saturday (09.17.05), let's say at 9 pm. it's pretty fucking good. they're also on tour, as mentioned above, you can check their website for dates too.

r.l. stein (stine?) recorded an ugly little blurt of a set for big don rettman's "clothesline" program. keep an ear out between 10pm-1am monday 09.12.05 for that.

recommended: hobbs angel of death satan's brigade. if you like crude australian imitations of slayer circa hell awaits and you fucking better. probably one of the key bands if you're trying to understand the bizarre world of modern australian metal (along with early sadistik exekution and probably slaughter lord or mortal sin or some bullshit like that).

i can't stop playing katamari damacy...

tony rettman played this hardcore band YDI on his show a while back and if all hardcore was as hardcore as this i would like more hardcore. guitar sounds like it's plugged into one of those 1970s entertainment consoles with walnut veneer and cardboard speaker cones, up all the way. all odd-order harmonics, no notes, tuned maybe. singer's batshit and pissed and he also happens to be, well, i guess i have some friends who are so i can say, but i don't want to be politically... BLACK! it's a BLACK GUY! there's your one-sheet bullet point!

the band is on that plain of sloppiness where it's all just always collapsing but it happens so quickly you don't notice it much; fuck jazz, and if i'm not clear on that fuck jazz because this is 'ecstatic' 'free' music even if it has riffs and you don't have to pretend it's visceral, it just is. and then on the lp (included in addition to the 7" and demo) they get all neat records 1983 (cf. any band named after war, war-related activities or implements). this and canadian speed metal from the 80s are keeping my brain twitchy enough to function.

the YDI (pr. "why die") album is called "out for blood" and it's on parts unknown records, and you'll need the link cause google puts them on like page 49 - 3 hours of my life wasted, the other 31 years were gold though.

when i listen to air conditioning, it seems so obvious - why does no one else sound like this? why the fuck is everyone wasting their time in these fucking useless hippie drum circles, err, ecstatic 'free jazz' influenced 'improvised' 'music' 'collectives?' where is the ugliness? where is the emotion, any emotion? is "dicking around" now an emotion? twelve art students with rainsticks aren't going to do my head in, and i want the fucker done in. i want music that will leave a swathe of ruin 50 miles wide, that cures leprosy by causing leukemia. the sound of tunguska, the shriek of thousands of half-assed whiners perishing in flames clutching copies of "smile" and "oh me oh my*".

thus: air conditioning. the sound of 737s flying into every building on earth. eternal tension with no release, knots and clots and tendons everywhere. a mouthful of someone else's teeth. three instruments and voice all trying to pound themselves into the same hole, becoming an ugly, throbbing, grease-smeared monochord. the soundtrack of your life, if in your life you frequently find yourself washing blood, skin and hair off the front of your car at 3 am.

couple of reviews of CDs i wrote for PRB. they've been modified as necessary, as they're essentially written to con college students into playing the dubious crap i like instead of conrad oberst or xiu xuxa or cat on farm or what the fuck ever.

joshua jugband five - damascus doldrum (ramadan)
modern psychedelia from sweden. god knows, i’ve heard enough bar band psych/’space rock’/terrastock excreta in my day, so it’s always exciting when something as plausibly zonked as this comes my way. caveman-psych instrumentals and a track of mushroom-cult mumbled chanting shamble, the kind of thing that could be from 1972 or 53 BC. take a hit and stare into the BLACK MIRROR until your dead relatives contact you with further instruction. everyone should be listening to this, but they're all buying every 20 minute CDR sunburned hand of the man crank out instead ("variation on a theme by carlos santana").

air conditioning - i’m in the mountains, i’ll call you next year (peel back the sky/white denim)
goddamn vicious, ugly noise mashed into vaguely ‘rock’ shapes by this POWER trio. kind of reminds me of the new world of sound/blackjack bands (liquor ball/sternklang/plague lounge) but with the psychedelic elements replaced by nihilistic, thugged-out heaviness and distortion so noxious it's like deadly orgone radiation. most of the songs plod away at exactly the wrong tempo, a weird plodding march beat, guitar and bass clawing at each other while the vocals variously forcefully whine and harangue. so excellent it makes me cry, like living in a world where people in rock bands listen to burzum and the gerogerigegege instead of modest mouse. these guys played live on my show; dust fell from the ceiling. the universal dream!
